Virginia GED ® Success Story: October 2013

Cristina Vasquez

Cristina Vasquez obtained her GED® test credential twelve years after completing high school in El Salvador. Her diploma from abroad wasn’t recognized by many employers in the United States. However, it wasn’t until Cristina witnessed her eldest daughter struggling with her schoolwork that she decided to lead by example and go back to school herself. Over the course of a year, Cristina and her daughter supported each other in their studies until Cristina passed the GED® test and her daughter graduated from high school with the rest of her class. Now, Cristina has a new job that she couldn’t have gotten without her GED® test credential: teacher assistant at Woodlawn Head Start and Preschool in Hopewell. Her daughter has now graduated from Richard Bland College and expects to attend VCU’s dental program.
