Virginia GED ® Success Stories: April 2013

A full-time job in construction lured Robert Phillips Jr. to drop out of high school at age 17. Because of his ability to learn new skills quickly, he was able to get jobs installing HVAC and fiber optics. However, when he was eventually laid off, many doors were closed to him. Unemployment led Robert to a low point, living out of his car with his wife. He took his family’s advice to go back to school. Though it was more than 20 years since he had dropped out, he passed the GED® test with high scores and was awarded a scholarship to continue his education at Tidewater Community College. Now, he has started two community organizations, APOR and Isaiah Group, to minister to the economically disadvantaged. "The Lord doesn’t open that many doors for you without a reason," Robert says. "That’s why I decided to give back to others who were struggling."
